Option One:
You simply
register the domain name and do nothing else. Result - web traffic
will see a generic non-descript error page.
Option Two:
You register the domain and point it to a "name server" that in turn
points to a website.
For example, you have an online
blog and whish to personalize it with a domain name. The blog hosting
service would supply details on where "to point" the domain name by
specifying the "name server." The advantage of using fillinthedot.com over
the blog provider is that you are free to change the "name server" at
anytime. Therefore, you have complete control over the domain name. Many
services require you to jump through hoops in order for you to move your
domain name elsewhere. Sometimes there is a slight savings in registration
fees when using a provider as the registrar.
Option Three:
You
register your
domain name with a hosting solution. As already stated, there is the
possibility that you might lose some control over the registered name.
However, this may be the best way for many situations. Fill in the Dot has
affiliated with
Host Monster and
Blue Host to bring you an excellent and economical solution to your
new domain names.
Option Four:
Fill in the dot recommends that you
consider using both
Option Two
and Option Three.
Both, you ask?
We believe that it is always a
good idea to secure and maintain personal control over both the .com and
.org versions of your domain name to protect yourself from "look alike"
sites trafficking on your good name.
We also believe that it is a good
idea to also secure the .net and .us versions of your domain name. And,
finally, we think you should consider registering some alternative names
too. Domain names are a tool that you can use to help your business stand
out from the crowd.
We suggest that you use ONE of the
.net domains at either
Host Monster or
Blue Host to secure your hosting. Then,
register the other versions of your domain names at
fillinthedot.com. This gives you the best of both worlds, complete
control over your domain names and an economical place to host all
your domains.
Of course, we are trying to sell
domains here, but our advice would be the same regardless. (Selling domain
names isn't exactly lucrative...) It just makes good business sense to
cover your bases and protect your interests.
